By Ann M. Martin
Squirrel, a sweet, strong 10-year-old dog, tells us her story after spending almost her entire life as a stray.
As a puppy, Squirrel and her brother, Bone, live with their mother in a toolshed behind one family’s summer home. Even though the dogs have no human family to care for them, the puppies feel safe. Their mother feeds them, keeps them warm and teaches them how to survive—Squirrel learns to find nutritious things to eat in the garbage that humans throw away.
One day, Squirrel’s mother doesn’t come home, and the puppies are suddenly forced to make their own way in the world. After getting into a few interesting and dangerous situations, Bone and Squirrel find themselves thrown into the parking lot of a mall. Someone decides to take Bone home and Squirrel is left to live her life alone.
Now, finally comfortable in a home with a human who loves her, she is able to tell us about the exciting and difficult adventure of her life.
