ER Vets: Life in an Animal Emergency Room

by Donna Jackson

We know a lot of teens want to become veterinarians when they grow up. Were you thinking of this career for yourself? Well, you may be in for a lot of excitement, especially if you work in an animal emergency room. ER (emergency room) vets have to be ready at any moment to take care of pets who’ve had accidents or suffer from sudden illnesses. As doctors in animal emergency rooms, they never know what to expect. That’s what makes the book ER Vets so exciting. It’s full of true stories about animals who’ve come to the hospital needing immediate help, like the brave cat who was shot in his abdomen with an arrow and a dog named Shelley who was in surgery for five hours after being hit by a car. You’ll also meet the vets who save animals’ lives every day and see photos of strange but true emergencies—like a bottle cap stuck inside a dog’s stomach. In the back you’ll find a glossary explaining all the high-tech equipment vets can use now to help heal animals.

Meet the Author: Donna M. Jackson

Donna M. Jackson likes to write nonfiction books because, in her words, “reality rocks!” She loves to find out the who, what, when, where and why of a true event and then tell the story in a creative way. She was inspired to write ER Vets because of a puppy named Sasha her family adopted. When Sasha was a year old, she suddenly began to limp and, because of a genetic disorder, had to have her leg amputated. Even though Sasha lived a very happy life with three legs, the author had a strong memory that made her want to write this book.

Donna studied journalism at University of Colorado, Boulder, and after accepting a job at a local newspaper, she began work on her first book, The Bone Detectives, another nonfiction book about how forensic anthropologists use science to solve crimes. She now lives in Colorado with her husband and son. On her free time she reads, skis, gardens, listens to music and hikes in the mountains. She’s also crazy about dogs, especially her two cuddly canines—Sophie, a Great Pyrenees "mountain dog," and Shadow, a 45-pound Labrador retriever mix.

You’ll find more information and other books at Donna’s website.
