In Flanders Fields

By Norman Jorgensen
2003 ASPCA Henry Bergh Children’s Book Award
Age Group: Young Adult

Set on the battlefield of World War I, In Flanders Field is the story of a young soldier who risks his life to rescue a bird caught in barbed wire. The soldier ties a white flag, a sign of peace, to his weapon, and walks in between enemy lines to save the helpless robin. This one man’s heroism shows how good deeds do exist even among the destruction of war.

Meet the Author: Norman Jorgensen
Norman Jorgensen lives in an old house near Perth, Australia. Born in 1954, he grew up with three younger brothers in the country, and gained a love of history by watching Saturday afternoon movies and reading novels about World War I. He enjoys all kinds of books, as well as photography, traveling and furniture making.

Jorgensen wrote In Flanders Field after seeing the movie version of All Quiet on the Western Front. His latest book is called Jack’s Island, and features two mischievous boys in Australia during World War II.

I think it shows the power or beauty of nature, that even in the midst of the bloodiest, most horrible battle of WWI, in the trenches, a beautiful bird makes you forget all the anger, and "us vs. them" stuff, I LOVED this book, loved the poem and the illustrations just made me want to cry. I actually researched the battle after I read this book, it's fascinating./

Thank you for inviting me to join: I look forward to reading this book. One thing that amzes me is how someone can truly retain their compassion amidst war... it is good for the soul to know this.
