What first piqued your interest in animals, specifically the veterinary aspects of animal welfare?

Hi Joe, my interest and the book - ER Vets - were inspired by my family's first dog, Sasha. We adopted Sasha from the Humane Society in Boulder when she was a puppy, and by the time she was about a year old, she began limping on her left front leg. After a few vet visits and some X-rays, the doctors determined that she had a genetic disease and that the best course of action was to amputate her leg.

We were heartbroken for our dog and agonized about the decision. But Sasha went on to live a happy life as a "tripod."

Years later, I read a magazine article about emergency veterinary work, and it brought back memories of Sasha, which prompted me to write the book.

I'm glad that there was a positive outcome for both you and Sasha. Thank you for your time.
