2002 ASPCA Henry Bergh Children’s Book Award
Kathe Koja’s novel, Straydog, is the story of Rachel, a high school student who doesn’t have many friends and feels frustrated most of the time. She enjoys spending her time volunteering at an animal shelter, where she meets and falls for a tough, stray collie named Grrl. As she writes about her relationship with Grrl, and develops a burgeoning friendship with a classmate named Griffin, Rachel unlocks her heart and makes way for love and self-acceptance. A story of letting go, this book provides an opportunity to discuss the humane treatment of animals and the importance of trust in all relationships.

Meet the Author
Kathe Koja lives near Detroit with her husband and their three cats. A longtime animal lover, she believes that you can learn everything you need to know about a person by watching the way he behaves with animals and children. She started her career by writing science fiction and short stories, but soon turned to novels for teenagers.

Kathe has published several books for young adults, including Talk, Going Under and Kissing the Bee. Her latest is called Headlong, and features two teenage girls, their unlikely friendship and the quest to “have it all.”

Hi, I really LOVED straydog. Do you have any pets of your own? What kind/breeds? Do you work with any rescue organizations or shelters? ~Nat

I can definitelyrelate to the character of Rachel, fitting in with neither geeks or freaks when I was in school Is her life at all based on your own high school experience?

Hi Kathe, I really enjoyed straydog and am hoping to teach my students about kindness (for both humans and animals). What was your inspiration for the book?

How long does it take to write a book like this. I would love to attempt it and publish but would not know where to start or how to get the word out about my book.

Why did you decide to make Grrl a collie? Do you have any in real life that mean something to you?
